Top Foods To Try In Naples
One of the reasons I was excited to visit Naples was for the food . It is known as the birthplace of Pizza ! We stayed in Naples for one night and two days . I made sure to leverage those two days to try some awesome dishes ! Here is what we ate in Naples .
1. Neapolitan Pizza – It is believed Pizza originated from Naples in the 18 th century or early 19 th century. Neapolitan crust tends to be thinner, almost like a flat bread . The sauce is made from tomatoes grown on Mount Vesuvius and cheese made locally ! We had a chance to try Pizza at two famous places . One where the Margherita Pizza was invented and the other place is from Eat, Love And Pray ( the movie/book ) .
Pizzeria Brandi – Antica Pizzeria Della Regina: We had our first pizza in Naples here . It was lunch time and we were able to get a table for two without much trouble . This place is considered to have invented Margarita Pizza ! We had two type of pizzas – Margherita and one with anchovies . Both were delicious. Highly recommend visiting here ! Some reviewers complained about rude wait staff etc . We had no issues .
L’Antica Pizzeria da Michele – This is the Pizzeria from ‘Eat, Pray and Love ‘ . It also came highly recommended by friends. We went here for dinner on our first day . The line was over an hour ! However, It was worth it ! The restaurant only serves Margarita ( tomato sauce, basil and mozzarella) and Marinara ( tomato Sauce, garlic and oregano) Pizza . We had one of each and loved . Definitely will go back .
2. Fried Pizza ( Panzaroti ) – Fried pizza was another Naples dish that people recommended. This time we looked up the best place for it . The best place turned out to be Antica Pizza Fritta Da Zia Esterina Sorbillo. This is a take out place where once you got your pizza you stand outside and eat ! There was a line up but it was under 30 minutes. We got two different fried pizzas and thoroughly enjoyed them ! Definitely worth visiting if you are in Naples !
3. Sfogliatelle is a pastry that was recommended to try in Naples . I didn’t look up any specific places to try it in , instead ordered late night from cafe . It was okay . Nothing special. Maybe I should have ordered from a recommended place !
4. Struffoli – This is deep fried ball of dough that is dipped in sweet liquid and topped with different toppings. We tried this at cafe and we passed by on our wanderings and I didn’t like it too much . Again I would recommend doing research to find a proper place to try this in !
5. Cuoppo – This is various deep fried items in a paper cone. Mainly seafood and some veggies. These are all around Naples . We went to one where the queue was long and was not disappointed . It makes for an awesome snack . Definitely try this while you stroll around Naples!
Overall Naples is worth a stop on your Italy your . Many delicious food places to try and can serve as a cheaper base for Pompei, Herculaneum and Capri ! Allocate at lest one night two days to do justice to it .
