When we decided to travel to India, one of the biggest questions I had was, which Store would give me the best deal and choices in Chennai for silk saris. My mum is a big fan of saris, so this was a really important question for me to answer. I only had two days in Chennai as such I didn’t have too much time to shop around and figure it out while there.

When I Googled online, trying to figure out what are the best places for sari shopping, I mainly came across large store names and not many useful commentary or blog posts. because of that I’m writing this post.

Pothys

If you only have a short amount of time and you are looking for good quality Sarees at reasonable prices the best store is Pothys !

I know it sounds very typical, but Pothys has an unlimited amount of selection, it’s super organized, it’s by price point and has multiple floors of saris to choose from .

Depending on the material you are looking for and the price, the staff will direct you to a specific floor and the salespeople will actually help you look through as many saris as you want by color, by thread, and so forth.

Once you choose the saris you want, they will actually prepare the headpiece for you, they’ll cut off the blouse piece and prepare the headpiece.

Overall an excellent shopping experience.

Nalli Silk

Based on online recommendations, I also dropped by Nalli Silk which was located across from Pothys on T Nagar . It had shitty selection and crappy sales staff. Don’t waste your time on it .

Recommendation

For someone visiting from North America who’s looking for saris of a certain quality Pothys is your best bet . The whole experience is efficient, well organized with a great amount of selection.
