Kanchipuram Temples

Kanchipuram Temples

Summary:

  • Ekambareswarar Temple – Must visit . Massive Lord Siva Temple . Stunning architecture. One of the 5 famous temples of Lord Siva in India.
  • Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Temple – Must Visit .

After two days in Chennai we headed to Kanchipuram. That’s a town near Chennai famous for Kanchipuram sarees .

The main reason I wanted to go there was for buying sarees but my husband managed to find two temples that he wanted to visit.

Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Temple

Our first stop was Kanchi Kamakshi Amman Temple . This temple is believed to have been built by Pallava Kings whose capital was Kanchipuram .

Our driver arranged a person to take us around the temple . We had to pay him under 200 rupees which was an acceptable amount for us . Many temples will have such people who may help you navigate the temples or help you skip the lines . Make sure to negotiate an amount before you go with such people. Also check the size of queues for blessing before going with such people. At some temples it is pretty straightforward and you don’t need such people .

We got our blessing and saw the inside of the temple before walking around outside. This temple had a large outdoor area , huge pond and supporting buildings .

The kopuram of the temple was all white . The pond area was the grandest we seen of all the temples we visited . Definitely a must visit in Kanchipuram !

Ekambareswarar Temple

Our second stop in Kanchipuram was Ekambareswarar Temple . This is an ancient Siva Temple and one of the Famous five Siva Temples. Each of the five Siva temple represent an element. This one represented element of Earth . This temple also has a Mango tree believed to be over 3500 years old !

We had a dedicated driver for the day which made travelling between temples hassle free . Our driver had arranged a guide for us in the temple to skip the line for blessing . Definitely helped us save time .

Once we were done we explored the temple. This temple had massive pillars similar to Roman buildings . The entire temple is one of the largest in South India at 25 acres ! There were also lingams everywhere.

We also went to see the Mango tree that is believed to be 3500 years old ! I am not sure if it is 3500 years old but definitely an interesting legend .

We spent about an hour around the temple before calling it a day for temples .

Conclusion

Both temples we visited in kanchipuram were grand and unique! Definitely worth a trek from Chennai.
