Top Places To See and Top Things To Do In Venice
We were in Venice for three days and two nights . Loved our time in Venice . We took things at a leisurely phase and spend long time having lunches and dinners . So I am sure these places can be seen in a shorter duration but it took us three days .
Top Places To See
1. St . Marks Square also known as Piazza San Marco
This is the heart of Venice . It’s a square filled with many famous buildings all around which are covered below . Perfect place to people watch or take photos with pigeons.
2. The St. Mark’s Basilica
This is the Basilica located in St Mark’s square ( if you couldn’t tell by the name) . It is a very unique looking Basilica. Go early and get the ticket to go inside . It’s beautiful inside and the view from the top inside is also worth the cost and line to get in . See photos .
3. San Marco Campanile
The tallest tower in Venice . Also located in St Marks Square . You can go up after purchasing a ticket . It is the best place for a 360 view of Venice .
4. Rialto Bridge
The Grand Canal is the largest canal in Venice and Rialto bridge is the oldest bridge that crosses this canal . Bridges are much cooler in Venice . There are stores located on the bridge itself ! Rest of the world should take note . This is also the prettiest bridge in Venice ( in my opinion) . Very photogenic bridge . Try to go here in both day and night time .
5. Bridge Of Sighs & Doge’s Palace
This is a bridge that connects Venice’s prison to the interrogation rooms of Doge’s Palace ( administration building ) . The story goes as prisoners cross the bridge they got to see Venice for the last time through the windows on the bridge !! Doge’s Palace is the pretty pinkish building beside St Mark’s Basilica .
Top Things To Do In Venice
1. Wandering Around The Different Neighbourhoods
One of the more enjoyable things to do in Venice is exploring the different areas . You can do it two ways . Look up the different regions and have a planned path or just go for a walk and see where it leads you . It is definitely a city made for walking ( no cars are allowed ) .
2. Gondola Ride
You can’t go to Venice without going on a Gondola ride . I don’t care how touristy it is, you just have to do it . Try to do it when it starts ( around 10 am ) . Also if you can afford it – do a private one . Especially if you are a couple ! The experience is like nothing else .
3. Souvenir Shopping
Venice has many options for souvenirs. Murono glass jewelry, sculptures, paper masks , lace and many more . Depending on your preference you can buy cheaply made imitations or the authentic items . If you are looking for authentic – make sure to do your research !
4. Shopping
There are many stores for shopping including major chains like Zara & H& M. I was told before the European products are ahead of North American stores . This is not true . I found the same items in both regions stores. So I would recommend avoid shopping in such places and wasting your precious time ! Do go to Italian chains or boutiques. Places that would not be in your home town .
5. Night Time Strolls
Venice is different kind of beautiful at night time . It is less crowded ( day trippers are gone ) . There is something soothing about walking around on a summer night , listening to music someone is most likely playing in a square , and people watching . You can enjoy the city at a much slower pace .
6. Early Morning Strolls
Similar to late night strolls early morning strolls are also very peaceful. The city is just waking up and there are a lot less people . You get a lot placed to yourself. Definitely wake up early and enjoy the peace of the morning.
Overall Venice is a beautiful and unique city in Italy . It is a must on any Italy trip !
