Upper Antelope Canyon Arizona
Antelope Canyon has been on my bucket list since I saw photos of it in various publications!
Decided to act on it this year for my birthday! We booked the trip about twenty days before . What I discovered as I booked the trip was there are two parts to the Antelope Canyons . Upper Antelope Canyon and Lower Antelope Canyon.
Upper Antelope Canyon
This is the more famous of the two Canyons . There are these light beams ( from ) the sun that only shows up in the upper Canyon. Between 10 am to 1 pm . This Canyon is above ground and is more accessible.
Lower Antelope Canyon
This Canyon is also supposed to be very nice . It does not have the light beams . It is located under ground and you have to climb down a ladder to reach the Canyon.
It is highly recommended to book the tours to visit these two Canyons months in advance . That recommendation is no joke !
When I tried to find slots for the days we wanted to visit ( non weekend and in April ) I couldn’t find slots available!! I was crushed. I moved my trip around and managed to book lower antelope canyon tours . I couldn’t find any upper Antelope Canyon Tours and I was really sad !!! I booked my lower Antelope Canyon Tour with Kens Tours .
In Arizona
When we were in Arizona due to work commitments we couldn’t make our lower Antelope Canyon tour . We rescheduled with Kens tours but couldn’t find a slot for the day we would be there .
I was getting more and more sad !
Ken’s tours offered us an option to upgrade to a deluxe tour at much higher cost and use the cost we paid toward it . I found the practice of deluxe tours or combination tours to be a bit immoral and a way to exploit people who really wanted to see the Canyons and only had limited Time .
We decided not to upgrade to deluxe tour and just show up real early and see if the upper Antelope Canyon tour companies had any spots available.
On the Day Of The Tour
We left from flagstaff around 5 am and made it to Page Arizona around 7.15 AM. We saw signs for Horseshoe Bend on the way and stopped to do that hike . More information about Horseshoe Bend can be found here . Than we drove to the Navajo tour site . About 10 minutes from Horseshoe Bend . We were able to get spots on the 8.45 AM Upper Antelope Canyon Tour as walk ins !! There was no controlling my joy !! I was so happy that we were able to get this tour as walk ins !
From the initial meeting point the guide drives you to the tour site . You need a guide to visit the Canyons. Not allowed to do it on your own !
The Entrance To Upper Antelope Canyon:
The First Look Inside :
My excitement level was through the roof !
Upward Photos :
I took hundreds of photos and it was a struggle to just post a few !
The Dark Parts :
As you go deeper into the Canyon it gets dark !
Starting To Get Light Again ( reaching the exit ) :
The Other Side :
You walk through the Canyon and exist . In order to get back to your tour vehicles you have to walk back again . The walk is less than ten minutes but will take you longer when you initially go through as everyone is given a chance to take photos etc .
The Entrance From Inside :
Driving Back :
Once you finish your tour you get back to your jeeps and drive back to the meeting site .
To visit Antelope Canyon was why I came to Arizona and it was definitely worth the trip ! Such a uniquely beautiful place ! It also helped me discover a beautiful state I would definitely go back to !!
