Goa Gajah- Temple Near Ubud
Bali is all about the temples ! There is a large number of temples to visit and explore.
One of the temples we visited was Goa Gajah. Main reason for picking this temple was because it is near Ubud.
We went first thing in the morning. There is an entrance fee . Once you buy the ticket you have to walk down a flight of steps to get to the temple .
At the bottom of the temple there is a pool for bathing and multiple structures. Interestingly the first item to be discovered in early 1900 was the elephant cave . Only much latter the bathing cave discovered .
The elephant temple is a cave with an elaborately carved entrance. Inside it there are Hindu god statutes . This is believed to have been created between 9 th to 11 th century .
Inside the cave it is pitch black and musty . This is a very unique temple . I imagine there aren’t too many cave temples .
Once you are done with the cave and surrounding areas you can take another set of steps down to go visit a near by Buddha temple . In order to get there you have to walk through lush vegetation, a Lilly pond and a waterfall . It is a beautiful space and do take the time to explore the surrounding area .
Goa Gajah is a small uniquely beautiful temple . Definitely worth a stop .
